Alabama Shakes at the Bowery Ballroom 4/11/12

I went to hear Brittany Howard sing her guts out. She did. The Bowery Ballroom was a great venue to watch as this band finds their footing. But I found their performance,  one day their first album (“Boys and Girls” – ATO) debuted, so firmly planted, I couldn’t help but wonder, not if, but how many times did they blow the door off that garage in Anthens, Alabama.

Smoked a butt with Ben Tanner’s mother (keyboards). She likes to hit the street to hear what people are saying about the show. She was “tickled” by the positive feedback. She added that the band, “just a bunch of good kids”, was having a ball.

NOW onto the dudes in at the merch booth. Babe alert. It just so happens that I rarely do a shop when I’m at a show but, I was having too much fun not to buy something – and especially whennnnnnnnnn the t-shirt was only $20 and dope.

I also scored a 7in of “Be Mine” produced by Jack White on his Nashville label, Third Man Alive. B-side = “You Ain’t Alone”

“Bicycle Diaries” – David Byrne

Bicycle Diaries Cover

The lead singer of The Talking Heads explores U.S. and foreign cities from the seat of his bike. His    writing is just as good as his music, is just as good as his photography. In this book presents he the  overarching theme of urban expansion and it’s effects on the city’s geopolitical and cultural landscape.

“Bicycle Diaries chronicles David’s observations and insights — what he is seeing, whom he is meeting, what he is thinking about — as he pedals through and engages with some of the world’s major cities. In places like Buenos Aires, Istanbul, San Francisco, and London, the focus is more on the musicians and artists he encounters. Politics comes to the fore in cities like Berlin and Manila, while chapters on New York City, and on the landscaped suburban industrial parks and contemporary ruins of such spots as Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Columbus are more concerned with history in the urban landscape. Along the way, DB has thoughts to share about fashion, architecture, cultural isolation, globalization, and the radical new ways that some cities, like his home town, are becoming more bike-friendly — all conveyed with a highly personal mix of humor, curiosity, and humanity.”

Shakuhachi

A recent shift in my affinity for fringe to an all out obsession with it has me scowering shops for great resources. In the process I came across a great resource and an overall kickass line, Shakuhachi. The label is based out of Australia and designed by Jesse White. Like its fellow countrybrand, Sass & Bide, Shakuhachi offers the RTW market moments that are forward and always on trend. As if their accents aren’t enough,  here’s another reason Australians are awesome:

CO-OP Food & Drink

The new restaurant at the Hotel on Rivington, CO-OP, is a far better scene than when it ever was as Thor or Levant East. Thanks to the Guerilla Culinary Bridgade everything here hits high notes. The interior by H. DeVinn Visual is comfaortable and chic. The main dining room houses walls of photo portraits by EJ CAMP, which unless you are on the in-and-in, all but 5 will have you asking, “Who is that?” And no, it’s not Rumor Willis. Nor is it Cate Blanchette in the future. (Ask the waiter for the key if you must know.)

Executive Chef John Keller has produced a menu of all the locally sourced items which are meant for sharing so be sure you are a party of 4 or more, otherwise you could miss out on some great selections. Highlights: The Blistered Shisito Peppers, Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice, and Uni Risotto. The Miso Fluke was outstanding and garnished with a “garlic chip” which is actually pulverized Pringles – lowbrow BRILLIANT! If you can get at one of Michael’s tables do but service here is so excellent you be more than fine if you don’t. The music is fun, fun, fun - a late dinner reservation will turn into dancing in the main dining room.
